Rule the World at the Bath & West Show

Couldn’t nab tickets for the sold out Take That show in Bristol? The Royal Bath & West Show has got the next best thing – the ultimate Take That tribute band endorsed by Gary Barlow himself! We caught up with Dan Maines – AKA Gary Barlow – to find out more.

How did you get involved?

My dad was a musician and he taught me everything I know. I was a percussionist, I also played guitar, keyboard and piano but I worked on building sites too. Just by pure luck my friend was going for an audition and he asked me to come along for moral support. The interviewer asked if I could sing any Gary Barlow as he was putting together a Take That tribute band – I said yes, sang a few bars and he offered me the job.

What’s your favourite gig?

We’ve been doing it for 12 years now but there are a few stand outs. We played a festival in Barcelona to 23,000 people and one in Germany playing to 18,000 people.

How many gigs do you play per year?

Roughly 180-200. We play all over Europe – we’re never in the same place which is a highlight and lowlight. One night last year we were playing in Weymouth, the next we were in Scotland. When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time at home, writing and recording my own music.

What’s your audience?

Mainly women and their husbands that they’ve dragged along. It’s funny because you can spot the husbands immediately who think they aren’t going to enjoy it but by the end they’re up singing and dancing along. But we have a mix of ages, there’s something for everyone.

Funniest moment?

We were in Ireland a few years ago and just in front of the stage was a barrier and behind that was the crowd. I decided to do the Rockstar hand sweep – running along the front of the stage high fiving the crowd. I didn’t realise there was a staircase at the side of the stage, and I fell straight down it. Luckily no injuries though!

What can people expect from your performance at the Bath & West Show?

Expect a Take That concert – we do the whole lot – costumes, mannerisms and dance moves. It’s a good laugh and everyone gets involved.

What’s next from Rule the World?

It’s all top secret! But we are constantly working on updating the show.

Have you ever met Take That?

We met once on the Graham Norton Show, they were really nice and really appreciative of what we do. It was very strange to meet Gary Barlow after all this time playing him. It would be the jackpot if we ever got to play with them!
